John M. Trey Terry III

Last night at the Carl May Center, 5:30pm before the council meeting, the council and I will celebrated Black History Month with a proclamation honoring and recognizing the contributions to the city by the African American Community.

Joined by African American leaders and members of the community, I also be presented a commendation to John M. “Trey” Terry III.

Trey, an 8th grader at Desert Springs Middle School involved in the Associated Student body, is enrolled in honors courses and attends the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Academy at the University of California.

He was being recognized as an Emerging African American Leader for all of these accomplishments as well as for his most recent: he is the first African American to have won the Palm Springs Unified School District’s Spelling Bee.

Being the first Desert Hot Springs student to win this, he now goes on to represent our district in the Riverside County Spelling Bee on February 23, 2016 in Moreno Valley.

One of my most favorite parts about being Mayor, honoring our youth. John “Tre” Terry should be an inspiration to all of us. He was the winner of the Palm Springs Unified School District spelling bee, but take a minute to read the commendation. This young man is going places in life.
